Designer, Sort-Of

Something from the "yeah, it's from Wal-Mart, but do I really want to spend $400 on crib sheets?" department.

Last week, we wrote about the $71.97 Tulip crib bedding set from Wal-Mart that was making us question whether there was any association with Dwell Baby. The general consensus was that it was just a knock-off. Now that we've stumbled upon Orchard Park ($79.97), another newish crib bedding set that was clearly inspired by Dwell Baby's Motif Robin, it seems as if the knock-offs are in full bloom. But, really is that a bad thing?

We have both the Wal-Mart Tulip set and the Dwell Baby Garden Crib bedding, and frankly, the Dwell Baby bedding hasn't blown us away to be worth the almost five-times price difference (to be fair this is before multiple washings or any serious use). The Dwell Baby comforter, in particular, didn't look nearly as nice as it does in photographs (maybe we expected too much and thought there would be some embroidery rather than just a print).

Book Giving Made Easy

It seems as if today's unofficial theme at Nested is turning out to be book giving. So, if you've found the perfect bookplates but are at a loss for what books to actually give or what books are age-appropriate, check out The Gifted Grasshopper for "bags bursting with books." Not only will they pick out books based on age and theme, but will also package their selections with trimmings that make reading time even more special.

John W. Golden (the artist behind the popular "By Order of the Management" series) is holding an Etsyversary BOGO sale from now unti July 23rd. That means when you buy one print, you can get another one for free (limit two free prints per order).

Although one of our Nested responsibilities is to narrow down options for our readers,  we're at a lost when it comes to picking on the print we're liking best. But if we must, definitely check out the Fido Series and Critter Series. We'll probably be picking up a print of The Hirsute Hedgehog and The Sensible Owl.

Modern Basics Fleece Blankets

Over at Amazon, you can pick up way cute Modern Basics 40x30 fleece baby blankets for at least 75% off their list price of $36 (we've seen them on other sites for up to $40 each). They're offering nine different designs on sale (each with inexplicably different pricing varying by pennies) from $8.61 to $10.88. Cute and cheap equals quite the deal. We picked up one in Pink Bubbles and Brown Frog.

Dwellbaby at Wal-Mart?

Via AT: The Nursery, we noticed a link to someone on Ebay selling what they bill as a Dwellbaby-made bumper (bumper only) that was sold at a major retailer. From the picture, the bumper looks clearly like the Tulip bedding set sold at Wal-Mart for $71.97.

Now, this wouldn't be the first time we've seen someone on Ebay claiming a knockoff to be a designer item, but we're curious: Is this tulip bedding design associated with Dwellbaby in any way? Is this part of a lower end line meant to be distributed at big retail stores like Wal-Mart?

For those who love the pattern (it does look very Dwellbaby), you'll be happy to know the set hasn't been discontinued and you can purchase it on Wal-Mart online right now. We couldn't resist the $8 rollback and picked up a set, if only to compare it to a real Dwellbaby set.

Affordable Art with Personality

If you've spent any time trying to decorate your child's room or nursery, you're probably aware that the wall art with the most personality is usually found online and the your options are pretty limited at most brick and mortar baby stores. We love you Babies "R" Us (actually, we really don't), but the matching fabric art to go with the crib bedding and curtains isn't cutting it.

We've seen and bought some great stuff online (Sion Lee's art is a good example) but can't help but to want even more options. That's why we were delighted to see iStockphoto offers the ability to purchase prints.

iStockphoto is a photo/illustration stock photo service that relies on the contributions of their members. Because it's user-generated art, the prices of digital are quite affordable (between $1-$10 for most illustration digital files). While most of the art is used (we assume) professionally for online and print work, the ability to get prints of iStockphoto art gives parent-decorators a whole lot more options. 11x14 prints start at $9.95. Here's a screenshot showing how to find the "buy print" link.

There are a number of artists on iStockphoto with portfolios suited for the nursery or child's room and it's quite easy to browse for terms and color palettes. To get you started, here a few images that we would love to see hanging in the little one's room.

Considering that your baby won't be doing too much walking in her early months, it's kind of funny to spend  so much money on shoes she'll be soon outgrowing. However, we  couldn't resist these inexpensive, yet adorable shoes from Pearl River. At $5.50 - $6.50 a pair, let those little feet grow!
